‘Flow State’ - “a mental state in which a person is completely focused on a single task or activity.”
Initially inspired by ‘POSTCARDS’, Flow is a body of work made 'mindlessly' (as opposed to mindfully). There is no direct visual reference or intention when creating these pieces of work. Beginning with any easily available material - charcoal or acrylic paints so far - and allowing any subconscious lines and forms to emerge and naturally morph together.
This process of mindless meditation is highly satisfying, therapeutic, and allows for a quiet mind without having to be grounded in one's body. It's an escape from the physical world, into a focus that has no bounds. To me, it feels like a limitless place deep within myself; a bodyless experience where I solely exist as a tool through which my subconscious may enter the physical world as it chooses. All sense of self is lost as I am unable to actively enter or explore my own subconscious.
This opportunity to enter the flow state and become a vessel for our inner worlds, letting things pass through you without questioning or analysing them, allows a deeper connection and relationship to form with ourselves. This is something that constantly being on our devices, and living packed, busy lives takes away from us.
These drawings and paintings are an insight into a different realm - a reality far away from technology, somewhere probably closer to the spiritual world. This is a stark contrast to ‘LIMINAL SPACE’, which specifically explores virtual and mixed realities as an external escape from the real world. These drawings and paintings, on the other hand, are an escape inward.
