FLOW

In the process of creating ‘POSTCARDS’, I found commonalities and repeated forms appearing in my work. These weren't pieces from my surroundings, but rather morphed images appearing through my subconscious. To understand this further, I looked into the ‘Flow State’ - “a mental state in which a person is completely focused on a single task or activity.”

Being in the state of flow, at least for me, is a form of meditation. My mind, my body, my soul, my entire being is focused and in harmony with itself. Creating in such a state of being allows for the subconscious to come through with no external distracting ideas interfering.

This opportunity to enter the flow state and really explore our inner worlds, focusing on how we feel and understanding ourselves, is essentially what constantly being on our devices takes away from us - a deeper connection and relationship with ourselves. For some, things like sport, meditation, and cooking are ways to reconnect; for me, it has been creating this body of work.

These drawings and paintings made in the flow state are a reflection of the subconscious and an insight into a different realm - a reality far away from technology and closer to the spiritual world. This is a stark contrast to ‘LIMINAL SPACE’, which specifically explores virtual and mixed realities as an escape from the real world. These drawings and paintings, on the other hand, are an escape inward.
